President Donald Trump’s four nominees to the U.S. Sentencing Commission include three well-known conservatives who may be inclined to support tougher sentences in federal criminal cases.
The White House announcement Thursday described it as a “bipartisan group” of nominees, but if all of them are approved by the Senate, the voting majority of the six-member commission (two of whom serve as ex-officio, nonvoting members), could tilt rightward, according to observers.
The commission, an independent judiciary agency, was created by Congress in 1984 “to reduce sentencing disparities and promote transparency and proportionality in sentencing,” according to its website.
With Trump’s ability to appoint massive #s of federal judgeships, as well as his usage of the federalist society as a reference for names and views, you might as well accept the fact that we as a group will get very little support. The dream of and end to the registry in any of our lifetimes is just that, a dream. I am not being negative, just honest and realistic.
Crumbs will be thrown as long as it doesn’t rock the political boat. My goal is to leave this shithole of “democracy”. I am fortunate in that I discovered a path that will get me German citizenship and I can leave all this behind. It will take a couple of yrs to get done, but I can now breath easy. The system will not let you out. And accepting it with grace is not an option for me.
I have to admit the feeling that sometime in the last 18 years I had entered fully into some surreal universe. It hit home with me falling into this sex offender registry which countered every thing I ever believed to be justice in America. Before I believed one could take responsibility for your transgressions, suffer through paying your dues and then reenter into the circle of the worthy and usefully employed. Then we elected none other than a septagenarian Zaphod Beeblebrox to lead our country. Justice becomes totally subject to a crazy view of social order. I am not fearing the great here after from now on. I just feel sorry for those beginning their human journey in this country.
